es algo parecido al "Google Summer of Code" pero aplicado a proyectos
espaciales.

The Helioviewer Project has been accepted as a mentoring organization for
ESA’s pilot project Summer of Code in Space 2011 (
http://sophia.estec.esa.int/socis2011/):

"ESA Summer of Code in Space (SOCIS) is a pilot program run by the Advanced
Concepts Team <http://www.esa.int/gsp/ACT/index.htm> of the European Space
Agency <http://www.esa.int> that offers student developers stipends to write
code for various space-related open source software projects. Through SOCIS,
accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the
participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software
development scenarios. In turn, the participating projects are able to more
easily identify and bring in new developers. The program is inspired by (but
not affiliated or related in any way to) Google's Summer of Code
initiative<http://code.google.com/soc/>

  The program of this  pilot project has been announced at very short notice
(yesterday), and the application deadline is already on 27 July - feel free
to forward this announcement to any potential candidates.
