Is Haiku based on Unix? Is it a Unix-like operating system?  
Haiku is not based on Unix in any way. There are many design principles
that are the same, as there are between any modern operating systems.
Adding to the confusion, Haiku is POSIX compliant, so many Unix and
Unix-Like programs can be easily recompiled and run for Haiku. 
 
 
 Why are you using the NewOS kernel? Why not use Linux?  
The goals of Haiku are to re-create the experience of using BeOS as
closely as possible. Linux is a large system that has become fairly well
established at this point. Its kernel design doesn't fit well with the
BeOS kernel/servers/kits design. The general consensus was that using
Linux as the kernel would inevitably result in extending Linux, not in
recreating BeOS.

NewOS, by contrast, is a new microkernel written by Travis Geiselbrecht
(a former Be engineer). Its design is fairly similar to the (modular
monolithic) design of the BeOS kernel so it won't require great effort
to adapt it. Travis is supportive of the Haiku project and is willing to
cooperate with Haiku developers who are extending his work.

Using NewOS just makes sense and is a natural fit.

mucha idea jeje. Lo de OpenSolaris la verdad es que suena también mucho

Ahora que he leído lo de NewOS, me suena que basados en este kernel
también... bueno es iwal, a ver si me acuerdo mientras duermo o alguno
ha trasteado con ellos ;-)
